For nearly 90 years, the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre has celebrated the vineyards and the Montmartre area.
But it was as early as the 12th century that the ladies of the Abbey of Montmartre planted the first vines and developed wine production. Before urbanization and housing flourished on the Butte, three-quarters of it was covered with vineyards. They disappeared completely in 1928, only to be revived in 1933 to prevent a real estate project and preserve the land located at the corner of Rue des Saules and Rue Saint-Vincent. Thanks to the mobilization of local figures (Pierre Labric, Mayor of the Commune Libre, Jean-Louis Forain, Francisque Poulbot and Adolphe Willette, founders of the République de Montmartre, as well as Victor Perrot, President of the Historical and Archaeological Society “Le Vieux Montmartre”), vine plants—donated by numerous municipalities—were planted by the Ville de Paris.From 1934, the vineyards have been celebrated in Montmartre, under the patronage of Mistinguett and Fernandel!
Since then, every 2nd weekend of October, Montmartre celebrates its winemaking tradition and welcomes the arrival of the new vintage from its vineyard. From 2008, the City Hall wanted to extend the Festival to all neighborhoods of the 18th arrondissement in order to showcase, through a rich and varied program, the extreme dynamism of the district. A successful bet, thanks to the involvement and mobilization of municipal stakeholders, very broad participation from cultural organizations in the 18th, from the smallest to the largest, as well as schools, recreation centers, numerous associations and merchants/artisans from all neighborhoods of the 18th, blending the associative, economic, social and cultural fabric of the district.From the 2012 edition, it became important to involve the residents of the 18th even more by making them active participants in the Festival.
Mission accomplished, as each year the Festival counts more and more residents involved as participants in the event and no longer as mere spectators. Today, it is the massive participation of residents of the 18th, organizations, venues, and shops from all neighborhoods that constitutes the DNA of the Festival and must always be developed.
Having flourished to the point of becoming the third Parisian event in terms of attendance after Paris-Plage and Nuit Blanche, the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre is today a source of pride for the 18th arrondissement and an essential event in Parisian life.
Vintage
Throughout the year, since 1933, the gardeners of the Ville de Paris have taken care of the Clos Montmartre as well as the Comité des Fêtes et d’Actions Sociales du 18th—COFAS—which is responsible for winemaking under the direction of an oenologist, bottling in the cellars of the 18th arrondissement town hall, and marketing the Clos Montmartre vintage for the benefit of the district’s social programs.
